In 2013 Ms Michelle Saffer a single mother was denied a fee exemption by the Western Cape department of education and the Fish Hoek High school because she could not provide details of her ex husband’s income. Following a long court battle the Western Cape High Court ruled that both parents are liable for 50% of their children’s school fees. The Western Cape government is set to appeal the decision by the Western Cape High Court.
