EELC, together with Equal Education, have made a submission supporting Reclaim The City’s campaign to stop the sale of the Tafelberg property in Sea Point, Western Cape, to a private buyer. We argue that the development of affordable housing in Sea Point would be a step towards fulfilling the constitutional obligation to redress the legacy of unequal access to education resources under Apartheid. Should the private sale proceed, and plans to open an independent school on the property come to fruition, the state would be signalling at least tacit support for the commodification of education and failing in its constitutional imperative to further access to quality public schools.
