EELC attorney, Amanda Rinquest, writes about of a nine-year-old child who has for years been denied access to education because she has no birth certificate. The learner’s mother also has no identity documents because her parents died when she was very young. Despite the family’s struggle to resolve the issue, the state long failed to ensure access to education for the child. Finally, with the EELC on the verge of launching a court application, the matter was resolved, but the denial of access to education to undocumented and migrant learners is a systemic and countrywide issue which must end.
