Joint media alert: Equal Education and the Equal Education Law Centre to host a public engagement on the Draft School Admissions Regulations and School Capacity Norms
On Saturday, 27 September, Equal Education (EE) with the support of the Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) will host a public meeting in Gauteng, open to all, to discuss the Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) recently released Draft Regulations on the Admission of Learners to Public Schools and the Draft Regulations on Minimum Uniform Norms and Standards for the Capacity of Ordinary Public Schools (the Draft Regulations). These Draft Regulations were released for public comment, and the deadline for submissions ends on 5 October 2025. The Draft Regulations represent a significant milestone for equal and quality education, and the voices of communities must shape what they ultimately look like. They are a direct outcome of years of relentless advocacy, research, and campaigning by EE members alongside EELC to hold government accountable and call them to action on two pressing issues in South African schools – chronic overcrowding and exclusionary admissions processes.
This event is more than an information session. It is a platform for school communities, including parents, learners, teachers, and school governing bodies, to review the Draft Regulations, voice their concerns, and demand necessary improvements before they are finalised. Public officials from the DBE, Gauteng Province, and Gauteng Department of Education have been invited to listen to communities as well as to clarify their role in the future implementation and prioritisation of these critical Regulations.
We invite all media houses and interested members of the public to join the day’s proceedings in the spirit of equitable democratic participation and people-centred accountability in the education system.
Date: 27 September 2025
Time: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
