A year-long programme that equips young people aged 15-25 with legal and advocacy skills to fight for education justice while building pathways to careers in law and social justice.

WHAT IS THE EJA FELLOWSHIP?

The Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) Education Justice Ambassadors (EJA) Fellowship is a programme for young people aged 15 to 25 years old from under-resourced schools. The programme supports learners who are experiencing injustices come up with youth-led solutions.

We know that young people in marginalised communities already understand the problems in the education system because they live with these problems every day. But often there is no clear path to use this knowledge to create change or build a career. This fellowship helps to close that gap.

The fellowship does two things at once: learners learn professional skills for their future careers, and they will also use what they learn right away to solve problems in their own school. This means learners help their communities now while also preparing for their future.

WHO CAN JOIN THE FELLOWSHIP?

We strongly encourage young women, gender-diverse youth, learners with disabilities, and over-aged learners (learners who are older than usual for their grade) to apply.

The Fellowship is for young people who:

  • Are 15–25 years old
  • Are in Grade 9, 10 and 11
  • Go to no-fee schools in township and rural schools
  • Live in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Western Cape, or Northern Cape
  • Want to learn, grow, and build skills for the future
  • Passionate about education justice and want to make a difference

You do NOT need:

  • High marks in school
  • To know anything about law
  • Previous leadership experience

We are looking for learners who are curious, committed, and willing to learn.

We also provide:

  • Support all travel logistics for all activities
  • Data for online sessions
  • Support for learners with disabilities
  • For learners who do not have a cellphone, communication support will be provided

The Fellowship is completely free. EJAs and caregivers do not pay anything to participate.
