Palesa Manyolole and Others v District Director: Maluti District and Others
Learners at Moshesh Senior Secondary, in the village of Queen’s Mercy in the Eastern Cape, first wrote to Equal Education in 2012. The learners reported inter alia that teaching and learning was not happening at their school, that they lacked resources, and that the principal had not been present at the school for more than six months.
The EELC represented the learners and EE in litigation against the Department of Edcuation, the education district of Maluti, and the school. A settlement agreement was made an order of the court, and the school was required to put into place a new governing body and principal, and to develop catch up plans and a school improvement plan. The EELC, along with Equal Education, then coordinated a workshop for the school’s teachers, the new SGB, and the District, which was run in April 2015 by Professor Mary Metcalfe, and which focused on the development and implementation on plans to improve teaching and learning at Moshesh.
